Exhibition “Temporary Buoy” | Norbert Delman
On the 2nd October 2026, at the State Art Gallery in Sopot, Norbert Delman will present a sculptural installation as part of the project Temporary Buoy, curated by Jarosław Lubiak.
The central element of the exhibition is a seven-metre-long fishing boat — a tangible fragment of human civilisation that becomes a site for the emergence of new, imagined forms of life. Temporary Buoy is an encounter with forms of life that might emerge among the waste and remnants of human civilisation. Acquired by the artist, the boat is an element of reality set against the outcome of an artistic struggle with the form, matter and meaning of the wreck. What appears to “overgrow” the boat creates an abstract composition whose individual elements can — and should — evoke a variety of associations.
The installation offers a sculptural interpretation of processes of decay and transformation. In doing so, it refers to the context of ecological disasters caused by human activity, the uncontrolled growth in the amount of waste, and the infiltration of pollutants into every sphere of the environment.
Delman observes processes in which destruction becomes the beginning of creation. In this project, the artist makes a metaphorical shift: the disintegration of one world opens up the possibility for another to emerge — unknown and difficult to name.
As the curator writes: “Art is the life of the inorganic and, at the same time, the transformation of the organic into still life. Its agency emerges from the constant tension between these states. Norbert Delman enables us to immerse ourselves in these struggles.”
